Here is President Mike's weekly newsletter:

Fellow Rotarians:

This week Dr. Richard Sharpe from St. Luke's University Health Network gave us a virtual tour of efforts to improve health care in sub-Saharan Africa--Cameroon, to be precise.  Dr. Sharpe heads up the International Surgery Team at St. Luke's, which aims to upgrade and permanently improve hospital care and medical practices in developing countries.  Sadly, he noted that there are billions of people worldwide lacking adequate (or even minimal) surgical care.  Kudos to Dr. Sharpe, his team and St. Luke's for making a vital difference in medical education and saving lives.

Rotary Welcomes New Member

This week we inducted Andrew Mowrer as a member of the Bethlehem Rotary Club.  Andy was sponsored and brought to the podium by his father, Tip Mowrer, and accompanied by his Uncle Gordon Mowrer and cousin George Mowrer.  In his introduction for Andy, Tip told us how he and Gordon were inducted into Rotary fifty-five years ago, in January, 1960.  Andy continues a long family association with the Bethlehem Rotary. Welcome, Andy.  We look forward to getting to know you and working with you in the years ahead.

Other News

Thea Phalon (Tastes and Tunes) reminded everyone that the T&T Committee is still in need of items for the silent auction for this year's event.  Please consider donating gift certificates or other items to help us reach our goal for the Boys and Girls Club.  The T&T Committee will meet again on Friday, September 4th, at 8:00 a.m., at the Hotel Bethlehem.

PDG Gerry Long sent notice that the District 7430 Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, October 8th, at Silver Creek Country Club, with a shotgun start at 12:30.  More to follow.

Our speaker on Wednesday, September 2nd, will be M. Rayah Levy from the Bethlehem Public Library.   Rayah invites us to bring our smart phones or tablets to the meeting so that we can follow along when she goes live to demonstrate the library's website and databases.  I hope you can attend.

Until then, continue to be a gift to the community.

Yours in Rotary,

Mike McGovern, President

Promoting education in rural Mexico

For more than a decade, Rotary clubs in the United States and Mexico have been investing in children’s education in Nayarit, providing scholarships, building libraries, and rehabbing school buildings. Carolina Gonzales Rivas, a scholarship recipient and now a Rotary member, talks about how Rotary has influenced her life.
