Our lunch meeting this week featured fellow Rotarian, David Shaffer, who informed us about the impressive work of the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley (UWGLV).  We are all well aware of David’s commitment to philanthropy in supporting our community, the Bethlehem Rotary Club and Rotary International.  True to form, David and his wife, Sue, served as the Chairs of the 2018 Campaign for the UWGLV, a campaign that is concluding later this month.

David Shaffer shares (and wears) his pride in UWGLV

Joining David were representatives from UWGLV, including David Lewis, President and Jill Pereira, VP Education & Impact.  Jill “educated” all of us about the six pillars that support their approach to improving education in our community schools.

Just Born and United Way leaders honor us with their presence

It was great to hear about the campaign from David and the results from Jill.  Thank you to David and Jill for a great talk!

Also at the meeting, we heard from Jacob Wolfe and Nyzear Matthews, our Shadow Program speakers from BAVTS.  Thank you again, for making them feel welcome while speaking to our group!

You should have all received an e-mail this week from “The Gerrys” (Foran and Long) requesting your participation in a recruitment event that will take place on Thursday, April 11th at the Hotel Bethlehem from 6:00PM – 8:00PM.  Events like this are so important in creating awareness for our club, with a longer-term goal of increasing our membership.  Please take the time to think of someone who you feel would be a great Rotarian… and bring them to this event.  In addition to spending time with your fellow Rotarians, you can meet new people and enjoy complimentary wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres!  Thanks to our Recruitment Committee for continuing to provide new and exciting programming…. It is working!!

And in that spirit, at our Board meeting this past week, we voted two new members into our club.  Congratulations to Will Rathbone and Zachary Smith… we look forward to getting Will and Zach formally inducted into Rotary International very soon!  For those keeping track at home…. We have added 9 new members to our club this year!!!  OUTSTANDING!!

At our Wednesday, March 20th meeting, we will hear from Charlene Donchez Mowers share an update on World Heritage status.  At our March 27th meeting, Rob Vaughn joins us as he provides “The Year in Review”.

Some reminders:

  • March 23rd is the District 7430 Foundation Gala.  The theme is “Costumes for a Cause”.  The event is held at the Brookside Country Club in Pottstown, PA from 6:00PM – 10:00PM.  Tickets are $50.
  • Be sure to get registered for the District Conference.  This year it will be held in Allentown at the Renaissance Hotel at 7th and Hamilton.  It will be held over the weekend of May 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Know that you can register in an “ala carte” fashion taking in as much or as little of the conference as you schedule permits.  Here is the link to view the event and get registered… District Conference Registration
  • Strike Out Hunger is back!  Thanks to Gerry and Jill long for leading the charge.  They are looking for 3 volunteers to assist them in coordinating this event which will be held on August 15th at Citizens Bank Park vs the Chicago Cubs.

Yours in Rotary service,
