So, a special “Thank You” goes out to Thea Phalon, who was a better pinch hitter this week than anyone on the Phillies roster (sorry Gerry!).  A last minute scheduling change required us to reschedule our “Year in Review” presentation from Rob Vaughn until April 17th.  Thea’s presentation made us forget that Rob was on the agenda!!  Most of us have a story to tell about how we were introduced to Rotary… and Thea is no exception… and she shared that story with us on Wednesday.

In 2009, several years before Thea was a Rotarian, she was encouraged by Gerry Long to participate in Rotary’s Group Study Exchange program.  This program provides for 4 non-Rotarian young professionals, accompanied by 1 Rotarian leader, to travel internationally to another participating Rotary District.  Thea’s exchange program took her to District 1910, which included Austria, Slovenia and Croatia!  While there, she was hosted by Rotarians as they toured the areas and attended several Rotary meetings along the way.  What an exciting way to get introduced to Rotary!  And now, 10 years later, she is about to be our next club President!!  Thank you, Thea for all that you do, and stepping up at the last minute to provide an informative AND entertaining presentation!!

Our RAGAS (Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery) group was also busy this week, as they supported the movie screening event Human Trafficking – Close to Home – A Survivor’s Story that was held at PBS39 and hosted by PBS and Lehigh Valley Hospital Center.  It was a well-attended program with a sobering message… that human trafficking is here in our community.  As the President and CEO of Lehigh Valley Health Network Dr. Brian Nester reminded us, “Don’t look away from this problem”.  Thank you, Dee Dee and the members of our RAGAS committee for keeping us mindful of this very important issue in our community and society.

Dee Dee also unveiled a Rotary branded table cover and display that can be taken on the road to events where we are looking to create awareness.  Although  the materials will be used at an upcoming RAGAS event, they are portable and can be used to promote any Rotary event.  This is a great addition for our club!!

Our RAGAS Display - Thanks Dee Dee.

Thank you to Paul Ricciardi for organizing another successful DropKick Meeting this past Thursday.  More than 10 of us met at Taps Tavern for great conversation.  The momentum is picking up with these meetings, so come see what you have been missing!!

Registrations continue to build for our Networking Event on April 11th, but we still need your help.  We want to fill the Mural Ballroom at the Hotel Bethlehem, so please get registered with a friend and come for complimentary beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres!  Hank Barnette will be joining us to tell us why Rotary is important to him.

Please keep Patrick Morgan and Ray Malec in your thoughts, as they each lost their father this past week.

Some reminders:

  • Be sure to get registered for the District Conference.  This year it will be held in Allentown at the Renaissance Hotel at 7th and Hamilton.  It will be held over the weekend of May 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Know that you can register in an “ala carte” fashion taking in as much or as little of the conference as you schedule permits.  Here is the link to view the event and get registered… District Conference Registration

  • Bowl and Bites is “back by popular demand” and will be held on May 2nd.  Please be sure to sign up with either Buck Jones or Maria Nathans.  It is another opportunity to have fun in a relaxed environment!

  • The Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be here before you know it!  The event will be held on May 20th, so please get your foursome together and get registered.  Also, please bring some extra cash to our meeting and help to fill out the remainder of the Raffle Board.

Yours in Rotary service,

President Mark Reed
