Welcome to the 45th edition of my weekly newsletter! It was yet another exciting week for the activities of our club.
During our lunch meeting, we met Sumayyah Salahuddin and Destiny Deschamps. Both are seniors in high school attending BAVTS specializing in the area of Graphic Communications. As part of our Shadow Speakers program, Sumayyah and Destiny shared with us their experiences and a few of their design works! As always, thank you for being such a warming audience for them!
Destiny and Sumayyah proudly share their experiences and designs!
Our program feature was hearing Jack Standbridge deliver his classification talk. It was great to hear about Jack’s life experiences and it helped us all to better understand what an absolutely GREAT Rotarian Jack will be (and has already been!!). As a young professional, and even earlier, Jack has already demonstrated service above self through his volunteering and community service. Jack, thank you for letting us get to know you even more!

I also asked Maria Dietrich to speak to us briefly about the District Conference. Maria explained how, as a new Rotarian, it was a great opportunity to understand the broader reach of Rotary. Maria soaked it all in as she took advantage of all that the conference had to offer! A special thank you to Thea Phalon and Dee Dee Foran who were actively involved in the conference… Thea as a panelist of young professionals and Dee Dee who hosted the Human Trafficking information table during the conference. Also, thanks to Diane Donaher who received at the conference and presented to me at our meeting, two roses that were given to our club in memoriam for Paul Florenz and Don Hunter. Thank you, Chris Nelson, who captured the conference activities on her camera, the photos of which are posted on the website. Our club was well-represented and thank you to all who were able to attend and participate.
During our lunch meeting, I announced that our membership continues to grow. At our Board meeting this Wednesday, we approved 3 new members and 2 transfer members. Jim Geiger, William Matz, Jr. and Anne Miliham were all approved as new members and Rheta (pronounced Rita) and Richard Matthews are transferring from the New Bern Rotary club in North Carolina. Richard and Rheta are actually returning to our club, which is where they started their Rotary journey! Welcome back Rheta and Richard!
If you have not been to the website recently, please check out the photo that Al Philpotts has posted of the Dictionary Project in action at Donegal. How heart-warming and inspiring. Gail Evans, Deb Geiger and Al, thank you for sharing that special moment with us!
This week, in addition to our weekly speaker, we will be inducting Greg Capogna into Rotary International! Kamran Afshar, as Greg’s sponsor, will be introducing Greg. Please come and support Greg as he sheds the red New Member ribbon from his name badge and joins RI!
