Thank you to Kim Checkeye, the Executive Director for Truth for Women. The mission of Truth for Women is to provide restorative care for sexually exploited women and to increase awareness of human sex trafficking.  As you all know, human trafficking is clearly on the radar of Rotary International.

Kim Checkeye speaking to Rotarians.

Kim’s presentation was passionate and sincere, and you could feel that in the room.  We were reminded that human trafficking is not a problem that is “out there”… it exists in our community… and there are victims in and around us every day.  Truth for Women operates a local shelter that can support and protect five women.  For the safety of the women, the location of the home is confidential; however, there are ways we can help.  Much of their funding is provided by the proceeds from a boutique resale shop, My Sister’s Closet.  If you care to support this cause, you can shop or donate merchandise for resale.  Attached is the link if you would like to learn more about Truth for Women.

A special thank you to Deb Geiger, Cindy Glick and Pete Mickolay who continue to keep their watchful eye on the park at Sand Island that was restored as part of our Centennial Celebration.  Because of our investment in this park (both financial and in terms of “sweat equity”!), our Rotary brand is visible, so it makes it even more important to maintain our good work.  Thank you Deb, Cindy and Pete for your continued service in this area.

Three quick reminders:

  • Our annual Thanksgiving Networking lunch is scheduled for Wednesday, November 14th (next Wednesday!). Members from other Area 2 clubs are invited, so please circle this date on your calendar and plan to attend this special luncheon.  The price is $20… $15 for lunch and $5 for Polio Plus.
  • The Bethlehem Rotary will again support the Salvation Army by volunteering to ring the bell outside the Moravian Book Shop on Saturday, December 1st.  Ron Bauer will be circulating a sign-up sheet at our meeting for those who are willing to serve.

Please join us this week where we will hear from Randall Forte from the Lehigh Valley Arts Council.  Randall will inform us about the Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 Study.
We will also hear from Abigail Wenger, a senior at Liberty High School, and our BAVTS Artisan of the Month!

Yours in Rotary service,

President Mark Reed
Stories
Bob Cohen Book Launch
Fellow Rotarian, Bob Cohen, died unexpectedly and far too soon, on December 6, 2016.  A Renaissance man, Bob artfully continually reinvented himself, with ART at the center of each reinvention.  Bob, the singer, thespian, and author, adored libraries and gave special attention to the Bethlehem Area Public Library where he served as a board member, donor, and friend.  The library, in turn, dedicated the Bob Cohen Room, a concert venue and multi-use main floor space that will host lectures and meetings and plays and art galleries.

The library has just published "Home at my Typewriter," a book of selected poems that Bob wrote over many years.  Bob's wife Amy Miller Cohen, invites us to a book launch.  Details follow, but space is limited.  Please RSVP directly to Amy by phone at 610-867-5501.
