LAST WEEK: (with thanks to Jill Long for taking notes)
  • Vice President Lori Knerr led our meeting in lieu of President Hopeton, who is on vacation.  We met in Bethlehem’s spectacular National Museum of Industrial History (NMIH) at the invitation of Hank Barnette.
  • Hank Barnette told us how the NMIH got started and how his team worked diligently with officials to preserve the site for the community under the Conservation Act.
  • Once operational, it took some time for NMIH to reach its potential.  Hank was a marvelous narrator of the NMIH story.
  • Hank then introduced Kara Mohsinger, NMIH President and CEO. She told us that the museum offers a self-guided walking tour using QR codes at each exhibit. They have an excellent educational program for all ages
  • They are upgrading the second floor for museum events and to display some of the thousands of images and documents the museum has collected and are digitizing.  Here is a link Kara provided to view many of images from the collections:  https://nmihbethlehemsteel.omeka.net/
  • There are plans for Beth Works to use 200 acres east of the Minsi Trail Bridge, just a portion of the 1600 acres zoned for industrial projects.  There are 100 new businesses and thousands of employees now on that site.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Bill Eckert joined us as guest at his 3rd meeting as prelude to becoming a club member.
  • Jack Worsley reported that on August 10th we will meet in the MusikFest tent – parking parking details coming soon.  Lunch is available for $16.00 each.  Email Jack Worsley (worsley5555@yahoo.com) if you plan to attend and buy lunch.  Lunch is optional.
  • NOTE:  The Board will meet in the tent at 10:30.
  • Jill Long gave us a Tastes and Tunes update, reminding us that roceeds will be equally divided between our club’s charitable foundation and Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering, our designated recipient. The funds will assist them in opening a family shelter on the southside.  At present, there are no family shelters in the Lehigh Valley.  This is our only fund-raiser and we need 100% member participation in purchasing at least 2 tickets each – and if you can work on a committee please reach out to Past President Deb Walter (deb@prioritybracelet.com or by cell (610) 657-0952).
  • GO IRON PIGS!!  On August 4, we will be taking 35 kids from the Boys and Girls Club to the Iron Pigs game.  As before, we’ll have a suite high above the field with food and refreshments provided.  There may be 4-6 extra tickets for club members. The kids will be welcomed to use all the seats available suite’s balcony.  Club members who attend have the chance to get to know these amazing kids. So let Jill or Gerry know if you’re interested.

THIS WEEK:
  • This week our Wednesday noon meeting will be held at Ben Franklin TechVentures.  Our speaker will be Amil Parmar who will talk about a Ben Franklin client company - Cliquify.
  • Cliquify is a storytelling platform for business talent recruiters to showcase a company’s culture and create buzz across social media.
  • Directions:  From Daly Avenue, take Hayes Street to Mountain Drive and follow it to the Mountaintop Campus Entrance.  Just inside the entrance, turn right and park in the lot behind the Ben Franklin TechVentures building.  Upon entering, you’ll be guided to the conference room.

Route to follow to get to Ben Franklin TechVentures

  • FYI: Each of you were sent an earlier email asking if you want a lunch at Wednesday's meeting.  If YES, PLEASE let Al Philpotts know ASAP.  Lunch cost will be $15.  (aphilpotts@gmail.com) Al will call Hero’s Café on Monday ask for lunch details and then send an update to everyone.  Al will also collect lunch money at the door – exact change please!

Final note:  This week’s bulletin goes to press with no club members identified to fill service team positions, (greeter, luncheon treasurer, 50/50, etc.).   You may ask, “Why is this happening?”  The answer: because no one has agreed take over this role from Dee Dee, even though she has repeatedly asked.  So…be prepared to be asked at the door at Wednesday’s meeting to be “volunteered” into one of these functions for Wednesday’s meeting.

Yours in Rotary service,

Al Philpotts - for President Hopeton Clennon
