Last week our member Robin Burk, who is also assistant chair for the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club's dog show this week, was joined by Kailly Muthard of Educanine Training Services to talk about dog breeds and the partnership between humans and dogs in a variety of service activities. They brought a wonderful sense of humor in slides and speech, as well as a profound passion for the topic.
Kailly Muthard and Robin Burk
Dog shows aren't primarily beauty contests, but evolved to support preservation of specific breeds that are each optimized for different partnership activities that benefit our human communities. Kailly and Robin talked about evaluating and training her dog Neil, a show champion, to become a therapy dog certified to visit the sick, the elderly, and children as they tackle challenges like learning to read.
Pocono Mountain, Lehigh Valley, and Berks County kennel clubs host the Blue Mountain show cluster this Thursday through Sunday at Macungie Park. All are welcome to attend and to visit the vendor tents as well.

Experience Bethlehem from the vantage point of persons experiencing homelessness. Rotary board member Deb Walter, City of Bethlehem Planning Director and Rotarian Darlene Heller, and Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering Executive Director Bob Rapp will lead us from Sand Island to the Minsi Trail Bridge and on to Christ Church where we will grab a walking brown bag lunch. See and learn the challenges of our street neighbors and learn about the plans the city has to meet their needs as we walk.
We will meet at 11 am on Saturday, September 24, at Sand Island for a two-hour stroll that includes lunch. Please wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Our lunch is offered at no cost. You may make a donation to cover your lunch which will be prepared and provided by BES volunteers.
This BoardWalk, along with our homelessness book discussion on September 28, will prepare us to be excellent ambassadors for Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering at our Tastes and Tunes event on October 2.
TASTES & TUNES 2022
Proceeds from this year’s Tastes & Tunes benefit Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering. Join Rotarians as we read books about homelessness. Choose a book and read it before we discuss the books at our club meeting on September 28.
