At our meeting this week we welcomed Billy Staples from BEST, Inc (Building Educational Support Teams). Billy shared with us about the impact of mentoring on student success. The group works with students in the Lehigh Valley to provide mentoring and financial assistance so that students can fulfill their dreams of obtaining a college education. Mentors meet with students over a two year period to help support them in their goals. Billy shared some success stories with us from local students who have since graduated college and are giving back in our community. We also heard from Bradley Schifko, Interim CEO at Innovative Arts Academy about his experience with the program in his school. Brad shared about impact personal connection has on the success of students and how important it is for students to have mentors and people that care. Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are celebrating a major milestone this World Polio Day: confirmation that a second type of the wild poliovirus has been eradicated, which is a significant step toward the ultimate goal of a polio-free world. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, announced the historic feat in a video address during Rotary’s Global Online Update on 24 October.
