Our July 26th meeting was highlighted by the presentation by Jessica (Jess) Schwartz.  Jess, a Speech-Language Pathologist, provided excellent information concerning voice and vocal health.  Her interactive presentation had us all working our diaphragms, feeling the vibrations of hummmmm-ing and understanding the importance of “vocal hygiene”…. that is, taking care of our voices!  Her presentation even included a cameo performance by one of Jess’ leading patients, our own Gerry Long!  Thanks to Jess for a great presentation.

As a reminder, there were a few announcements:
  • Our final Strategic Plan is available online within our website OR hard copies are available.  Please see Gail Evans if you prefer a hard copy.

  • President Gerry announced previously that his focus for the year is childhood education.  The Club Board of Directors reviewed 3 alternatives: Summerbridge Academy, an enrichment program designed to assist future educational success for predominantly low-income students, was selected.  The District Grant Committee approved the club's request to sponsor 5 students--both the district and the club will contribute $2500 (total $5K).  The students are from 9 participating schools in the Lehigh Valley and they are likely to be the first in their families to graduate high school and/or attend college.

  • Jill Long provided an update on the Strike Out Hunger event.  All funding has been received to complete this trip on August 11th.  RI President Ian Riseley will be in attendance at this event!  Thank you to all who answered the call to make this become a reality again!

  • IMPORTANT:  Come to Rotary early this week!  Much of the Moravian Village parking lot is being resurfaced and unavailable to us.  Please use the street parking in the surrounding area.  Also, the parking lot behind the 526 Wood Street building is available for our use.

  • The July mini-meeting has been cancelled.  We will resume these meetings in August.

  • Our August 9th meeting will be at Musikfest.  Please remember to pre-pay for that meeting this week.

  • September 16th is the Rotary Leadership Institute at DeSales University, a great way to learn more about how you can help lead Rotary at the club, district, and international level. Please contact me if you are interested.

  • The 7th Annual Rotary District 7430 Yvette Palmer Purple Pinkie 5K run is scheduled for Saturday, October 14, 2017 at LCCC in Schnecksville, PA. The proceeds of this event go to RI’s Polio Plus Program. Our club is one of the sponsors, and we have two slots available for anyone who would like to participate in the run/walk. Please let me know if you are interested.

Yours in Rotary Service,

President-Elect Mark Reed
