Happy New Year! – I struggled to text that greeting to about a dozen friends yesterday. I thought that maybe if I wrote it, I would believe it.

At our lovely Christmas luncheon at the Hotel Bethlehem last month (thank you Sylvia Doyle and Hopeton Clennon for making it so special), District Governor Bob Hobaugh asked me how our year had been. “Weird” was my answer.

Then last night at a family dinner, my sister-in-law shared an old story of being forced to drive a stick shift just a mile or so in the tiny town of Nazareth to make it to her high school tennis match on time.

Shifting – jerky, nervous, unsure shifting -- that was 2021.

A few times in 2021 things were looking promising for getting back to our robust, social, doer selves. The board talked about attendance often. “What were the numbers? Who and how many did we lose when we were in person? Who and how many did we lose when we were virtual?”

This idea of losing was paramount – losing attendance, losing membership, losing impact, losing interest. Those losses paled in comparison to the tremendous personal loss suffered by several of our Rotarians last year, and our hearts broke for them. Just before Christmas, I lost a close friend and now I wince frequently at the thought of my best friend now widowed and grieving across the state from me. I will make many more visits to Pittsburgh this year to see her, but my support and help will be mostly virtual, too.

As we begin 2022, I wonder if it will be happy. The answer is probably yes AND no. I wonder if we will meet in person. The answer is probably yes AND no as variants come and go and relatively safe environments become available to us.

Will we be more productive and have greater impact on our community and growth in our club in 2022? I believe that answer is simply yes. Just like a new driver forced to grab a manual gear shift, we can only jerk and stall so much until it all comes together, and the shifting becomes natural, easy, expected.

This year, I don’t think it will be weird. It will simply be. We will continue to look for innovative ways to gather (in person and virtually). We will continue to look for ways to make an impact and grow our membership. We will discuss interesting books. We will host interesting speakers. We will walk and explore the City of Bethlehem together. We will volunteer safely. We will hear and answer the needs in our community.

Each week or month may feel different, but it won’t feel like shifting. It will feel like gliding.  Let’s glide together in 2022.

THIS WEEK -- We will meet via ZOOM at noon on Wednesday and start the New Year with a program on leadership by our own Paul Leese.
