Our attendance numbers continue to be strong for our lunch meetings.  It was another great week and I hope you all feel the energy in the room.  Mark your calendars for Wednesdays at noon, and make it happen!!

Our speaker this week was Commodore James Becker.  Jim currently serves as the Commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Fleet of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians (IYFR), and he spoke to us about the connections that can be created with fellow Rotarians, nationally or internationally, through common interests.

Jim reminded us that “fellowship” has been at very foundation of Rotary since its inception, and as Rotary has grown, these common interest groups have provided a creative way to unite Rotarians.  As many of you know, Deb and Jim Geiger recently began boating/sailing in the Chesapeake Bay area.  Deb explored the array of Rotary Fellowships and found this group of Rotarians, the IYFR, with the same common interest.  And through that connection, a friendship was formed, and Jim Becker (a member of the Rotary Club of Stroudsburg) and his wife Margie not only now spend time with Deb and Jim, but joined us at our meeting!

So whether it is antique cars, beer, wine, skiing, photography or scuba diving, there are more than 70 Rotary Fellowships to join and meet other Rotarians.  Thank you Deb for exploring these fellowships, meeting the Beckers and inviting them to our club!

We also heard from Guiliana Veras, a senior at Liberty High School who was our BAVTS Artisan of the Month.  As always, it is inspiring to hear the success stories of these young adults.

Craig Bower, a visiting Rotarian from the Cross Timbers Rotary Club in Flower Mound, TX joined our meeting.  Craig was in town to celebrate the 90th birthday for his mother Doris, who also joined us for lunch!  Thank you to all in attendance for the rousing version of “Happy Birthday” for Doris…. It was awesome, and Craig was SO thankful for the warm welcome that we provided for he and his mother.  Well done!

Thank you, Paul Ricciardi, for hosting another successful mini-meeting!  We had six members attend and engage in great conversation.  Join us for our next meeting at Taps Tavern on October 25th.

As for a Tastes and Tunes … WE ARE JUST ONE WEEK AWAY!

This is it… we NEED to step up!  We have had tremendous sponsor support and we need to deliver a first-class event for the sponsors and participating restaurants.  Please:
  • Volunteer just an hour or two of your time (talk to Cindy Glick)
  • Donate a silent auction item or bottle for the basket of cheer (see Dee Dee Foran)
  • Attend the event (go to our website and register)
  • Encourage another couple or friend to join you
This is my LAST opportunity to poke you for help… we can do it!

Please join us at our next meeting where we will hear from Carol Ferguson, the District Chair of the Polio Plus Committee.

Announcements:
  1. The deadline for submissions for grant applications to the Bethlehem Rotary Foundation is October 31st.  If you are aware of an organization in need of funding, please encourage them to apply ASAP!  Please contact Mike McGovern if you need additional information about applications and criteria.

  2. The Purple Pinkie 5K and Walk at LCCC registration period is open.  The event takes place on October 13th.  Herb Klotz, a member of the Allentown West Rotary and DG Elect visited our club to promote this district event. While he was speaking, he circulated a sponsorship form, and in one day, we received more than $500 in donations from our club members!.  These contributions will be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation! Thank you to the many Rotarians who sponsored the participants in the event.
