Thank you to all who weathered the storm to attend our weekly meeting.  The snow on Tuesday and the polar vortex were not enough to keep many of you away, and we had a very well attended meeting!

Thank you to Dave Erickson for sharing his classification talk with us this week.  Dave provided a glimpse into his life outside of Rotary, sharing his professional journey and his interests in his personal life.  After listening to his story, I think we would all agree that we have a tremendous Rotarian in Dave…. he has a passion for what we do and the time to get involved, which is a great combination.  In addition to his professional career as a Risk Advisor at Borden Perlman, Dave is looking to get involved in coaching (basketball or golf) and getting more involved in our club.  And in addition to all of THAT… he has a four handicap on the links!  Great talk Dave…. your presentation was excellent!

President Mark congratulates Dave Erickson on a superb classification talk

Also, during the meeting Jordan Young provided an update on the Children’s Coat Project that he helped to organize with St. Luke’s.  The $1,000 that was funded by our foundation provided 40 coats to children in need.  A Rotary patch will be on the inside of each jacket!!

Thank you Jordan Young for helping organize the Children's Coat Project!

I want you all to be aware of the continued great work of our Membership Committee.  To date we have:

  • Inducted 3 new members (Justin Porembo, Cathy Abreu and Dave Erickson)
  • Approved 3 new members (Greg Capogna, Jack Standbridge and Roger Exposito)
  • Added an agenda item to vote on 2 more new members at next week's Board meeting!

Adding eight new members in just over 6 months is OUTSTANDING work!  Thank you to the committee being led by Gerry Foran and Gerry Long…. their hard work is paying off as we continue to add great Rotarians to our club!

Unfortunately, we do, on occasion lose some members.  On January 21st, I received a letter from Pat Connell that advised me that he must (regrettably) resign from our club.  Pat mentioned that his commitment to caring for his wife has made it increasingly difficult to make it to our meetings.  Pat has been an active member since 1988, and during his 30 year journey he served as President, co-chair of the Foundation Committee, a member of several committees and a member of the Board multiple times.  I did send a letter to Pat which accepted his resignation and thanked him for his many years of dedicated service.  If you are reading this newsletter Pat…. Many thanks for your service!

If the Dictionary Project is important to you…. please contact Paul Ricciardi immediately.  If we are going to provide this worthwhile service to our local 3rd graders, we must get this project underway immediately, or it will be too late to pull it off!  If you are looking for a great way to get involved in an extremely meaningful way… this is your opportunity.  Importantly, much of the work relates to planning and logistics… most of which can be done from your home!  Please help…..

I only have 2 more opportunities to remind you about the Annual Meeting… please take the time to mark your calendar…Wednesday, February 13th, noon at Moravian Village!  Remember that we need a quorum!  Come see who will lead the club in 2019/20!!

Come to our meeting this week and hear from Past President Gerry Foran as he presents “PA Pension Plans – What a Citizen Should Know”.  We will also be presenting a few awards from the Bethlehem Rotary Foundation to representatives from the local beneficiaries.  This will give us yet another opportunity to hear about the great impact we are having as result of these awards!

Some reminders:
  • Our club will participate again in the Area 2 Outreach Hunger Event.  It will be held Saturday, March 9th at Moravian College.  We will need LOTS of volunteers, so please mark your calendars now, since that will be here before we know it!  This is part of a district grant match, so please help to support this event… we will be assembling over 40,000 meals for local agencies.
  • Be sure to get registered for the District Conference.  This year it will be held in Allentown at the Renaissance Hotel at 7th and Hamilton.  It will be held over the weekend of May 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Know that you can register in an “ala carte” fashion taking in as much or as little of the conference as you schedule permits.  Here is the link to view the event and get registered… District Conference Registration

Yours in Rotary service,

President Mark Reed

Rotary clubs fight opioid epidemic
After months of doing research and consulting with health officials, substance abuse experts, educators, and media professionals, New York Rotary members put together a plan to fight a major U.S. problem: opioid addiction. But they needed an international partner for their Rotary Foundation global grant project. Six months of searching connected them with the Rotary Club of Tijuana Oeste, Baja California, Mexico. Clubs in Canada and India also agreed to support the project with funds.
