At our meeting of June 13th, Jacob Lader, who is the recipient of a $500 Bethlehem Rotary Foundation scholarship, addressed our club. Jacob is a St. Luke’s volunteer, and will be attending college in the fall as a pre-med student. While working at St. Luke’s, Jacob became interested in studying the effect of treating patients both physically and emotionally to improve results.
The Walter A. Schrempel Music Scholarship is named for the 13th president of Bethlehem Rotary (1928-1929), who was a great lover and supporter of music and our community. Walter’s daughter, Martha, who attended the presentation, continues to be one of the top classical pianist and piano teachers in the Lehigh Valley, and is a faculty member at Moravian College. She also serves on the Scholarship Audition Committee along with Don Spieth, Al Philpotts, Bruce Palmer, and Jeff Parks.
Don Spieth introduced our Schrempel Music Scholarship Award winner for 2018, Micaela Azzati. Micaela plays the flute, and graduated from Liberty High School where she was a leader in virtually every musical ensemble: grenadier band, select concert band, orchestra, pit orchestra, and chorus. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Young People’s Philharmonic, and many other honors.
Accompanied by Bryan Holten on piano, Micaela treated us to performances of Charles Griffes' “Poem”, and Bach’s E Major Flute Sonata. Micaela plans to continue her flute studies, and perform in as many groups as possible while attending the University Of Pittsburgh.
