Our guest this week was Vicky Coyle from Meals on Wheels of the Lehigh Valley. Vicky shared a very interesting presentation on the merger of Meals on Wheels of Lehigh and Northampton Counties and their plans for future growth into a new building. MoW served over 600,000 meals last year and is seeing that number rapidly growing as our population ages. Although many of us in attendance were familiar with the basic idea of Meals on Wheels where volunteers bring a packaged meal to home-bound seniors, I think we were all surprised to learn the breadth of services they provide. Our local MoW is unique in that they have a kitchen on site where staff prepares fresh food for clients -- not the standard prepackaged meals we all think of. They also provide a grocery shopping service that allows clients to call in and place specific orders without having to log on to a computer. MoW is also expanding their services to better meet the needs of seniors, the disabled and those recovering from illness to include health and wellness services. Volunteers are always needed including floaters to take a route when someone is sick or otherwise can’t take a route and grocery shoppers.
Vicky shows the book our club will donate in her
honor to the Bethlehem Area Public Library.
Our Tastes & Tunes committee met Thursday. Planning is coming along for the event October 6. We are still in need of sponsors and auction items. See the website for these flyers. The next meeting is Tuesday, August 27 at 9 am at LVIP on Spillman Dr.
Thursday was also our Happy Hour meeting and we had a great turnout and a lot of fun getting to know each other better and sharing ideas for our club.
This Saturday and Sunday join us starting at 8 am for the Centennial Park cleanup. For those of you who haven’t been there, the park is directly across from the Ice House, the site of our Tastes & Tunes event.
Next week Bill Matz will give his classification talk.
