Rotarians enjoyed a new member’s Classification Talk at Wednesday’s meeting. Josh Berk, Director of the Bethlehem Area Public Library, gave us a guided tour of his career and the world of library and information science in the twenty first century. Josh is an accomplished library professional, having served in the Allentown and Nazareth Public Libraries before coming to Bethlehem. He is also a well known (and published) author of children’s novels and stories. Many Rotarians remember Josh’s parents, both of whom were librarians (his Dad, Jack, was also the Director of the Bethlehem Public Library). Thanks to Josh for sharing his classification story with us.
Our Artisan of the Month from BAVTS also joined us Wednesday. Madison Campbell is a senior Cosmetology student from Freedom High School. She spoke eloquently, not only about her career plans, but about her commitment to community service and helping people. Upon graduation, Madison plans to further her education in Business Administration, and then open her own business. Based on her academic success and the clarity of her plans, Madison has all the makings of a future Rotarian. Kudos to all her teachers, especially Natalie Green, who accompanied her to the meeting.

Here’s another reminder to bring nonperishable foodstuffs to our luncheon meetings on February 3rd and 10th, as Rotary continues to relieve hunger in the Bethlehem area. Canned goods, dry goods, paper goods and personal care items will all be accepted and donated to Northeast Ministry’s Food Pantry on Valentine’s Day. As our Project Committee likes to say, “Have a Heart and Share the Love.”
Buck Jones and the Fellowship Committee is planning another evening of “Bowl and Bites” at Revolutions (on Rt. 378) on Thursday, February 18th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Please save the date and join us for a fun filled evening of bowling, snacks and fountain drinks. It’s a great way to spend an evening with Rotary friends and meet new ones as well. It’s only $20 per person (less than a light dinner and a movie), so please consider joining us.
The Bethlehem Rotary Club will be staffing a booth at the tenth annual “Celebration of Reading” hosted by Cops and Kids of the Lehigh Valley, on Saturday, April 23rd, from 11:00 to 3:00. We will need volunteers to staff the booth, host a craft, and hand out books to the children who attend. If you can sign up for an hour at our Rotary booth, please do so at the sign up sheets at the front desk each week. OR, if you would like to donate a book that we can in turn donate to a child at the event, you can sign up for that as well, or see Shannon Sigafoos for more information. This is a nice way to welcome the Spring season with some important Rotary service.
Ron Madison reminded us that we will again be holding a Membership Night at the Iron Pigs in early May. We will have super seats in the Dugout Suite, and it is a relaxed way to introduce Rotary to prospective members in a social setting. We’ll be providing additional details as we get closer to “Spring Training.” Stay tuned.
Our speaker on Wednesday, January 27th will be Mark Wogenrich, the sportswriter from the Morning Call. It will be a perfect time to ask those Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Eagles questions that have been bugging us all year long. I hope you can attend.
