Here is President Mike's weekly newsletter:

Executive and CEO Coach Ed Parrish spoke Wednesday about the human element in human organizations. Ed, a former PPL Executive and Director of Administration for the City of Allentown, has been working as a leadership trainer, peer group facilitator and coach of business executives for over ten years, and has done training for firms and other organizations with anywhere from thirty to 2000 employees. Ed advised us all about the importance of asking questions (rather than merely telling people what to do), listening attentively and providing positive and caring feedback. By training, Ed is an electrical engineer with a Masters in Public Administration, but his humanistic advice is clearly borne out of worldly wisdom and experience.

Two mementos of our recent Centennial Celebration and are now available on the club website. Paul Ricciardi's video, "Reflections on Rotary" and Roger Whitely's "History of the First 100 Years of the Bethlehem Rotary Club" have been added for our future enjoyment. Check the download links on the Home Page to access both of these outstanding Rotary centennial artifacts.

Deb Geiger walked us through the process to volunteer electronically for the City of Bethlehem's 275th Anniversary "Community Day" on June 25th at Steel Stacks. Rotary will staff a table with promotional materials (and an eye for prospective members). Please try to help us out by volunteering for an hour. Register online or see Jill Long for further details.

Buck Jones reminded us of "Thirsty Thursday" on the deck at the Clubhouse Grill at the Bethlehem Golf Club Thursday, the 16th. We'll have a full report on the merriment at the next luncheon meeting.

Please try to attend the meeting on June 29th, as we will be installing the new President, Officers and Directors for the 2016-2017 Rotary year. This meeting is always a special one for our club, and it is important that the incoming leadership team sees the support of the membership as they begin their duties carrying us forward into the new year.

Dates to Remember

  • Wednesday, June 22nd: Deadline to make your 2015-2016 contribution to the Rotary Foundation. We're still hopeful for 100% membership participation.
  • Wednesday, June 22nd: Please bring food products to help "Rotary Relieve Hunger."
  • Monday, June 27th: District Changeover Night at the Hotel Bethlehem, with installation of new DG Linda Young (from Saucon Valley Club).
  • Tuesday, August 16: "Rotary Fights Hunger" Night at the Phillies. Please try to buy a ticket to send a youngster to the  game. See PDG Gerry Long for more details.

The speaker at the June 22nd meeting will be Jim Byrnes, Director of the Allentown Rescue Mission.  Jim will be introduced by Hal Funt.  I hope you can attend.

Until then, continue to be a gift to the community.

Yours in Rotary,

Mike McGovern, President

Korean global grant project keeps growing

If you can teach children to garden, you teach them life skills. That’s the basic philosophy behind a global grant project in Korea, where Rotary members built a greenhouse and train more than three dozen students with special needs the fundamentals of growing lettuce, packaging and transporting crops, and selling vegetables to nearby businesses. Read more about the project.
