  • At our September 27th  meeting, I reminded members to come and enjoy our Club’s Signature Event of the Year: Tastes & Tunes 2017.
  • Our Speaker was Sharon Jones Zondag. Sharon is the Executive Director of the R.K.Laros Foundation, and has addressed our club recently about the Foundation. This week, however, her topic was Beekeeping. Sharon is a 4th generation beekeeper, is a Master Beekeeper, and is currently Northampton Community College’s resident Beekeeper, which she has been since 2012. Sharon’s father, who is in his 90’s, continues to be an active beekeeper, and she draws much of her inspiration from him.
    • We learned that there are 40,000 to 60,000 bees in a typical hive, and each bee has a life expectancy of 21 days. Bees have a lot of jobs in the hive, and the top job is foraging. All bees go through the full cycle, doing each job, and eventually become a forager. This is the final stage of the bee’s life, and they essentially wear themselves out and die. They truly live out the Rotary motto of “Service above Self”.
    • There is currently great concern about the annual loss of honey bee hives around the world. Honeybees pollinate about 1/3 of the food we eat, and the beverages we drink, and the loss of this valuable resource would have a severe impact on our food supply. Without private beekeepers to stem the tide, many scientists think the feral bee population would be close to extinction.
  • Our 50/50 drawing was the fourth week of our return to the “Queen of Hearts” style. Mike Dunn had the winning ticket, but didn’t pull the Queen of Hearts. There are 48 cards left in the deck, and next week’s pot will start at $97. Come and try your luck!

Remembering Sam

The Rotary flags in front of Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and Rotary offices around the world flew at half-staff as friends and colleagues mourned President-elect Sam F. Owori, who died on 13 July from complications after surgery. Rotary remembers Sam’s quiet confidence, integrity, and friendship.
