Our January 31st meeting returned to Moravian Village.  Our speaker, Prabha Sinha, is the founder and President of Pratyush Sinha Foundation, which was created in 2012.  The mission of this foundation is to assist our communities in achieving health and harmony through mindfulness and yoga programs.  Prabha and her team of 15 mindfulness and yoga instructors offer programs in public schools, community programs and prisons in order to help advance this worthy mission.  Prabha not only informed us about the good work of the foundation, but also led us in some mindfulness “exercises” to help us understand how to escape the stresses of our daily lives!  Thank you to Sylvia Doyle for introducing us to Prabha.

This week, back by popular demand…. please join us for an encore presentation by Barb Miller.  The title of Barb’s program is Wildlife in Your Backyard – Part 2.  You might recall Barb’s excellent presentation last year, telling us stories and educating us about how to care for injured wildlife.  Who knew these resources were available.  Come hear new and exciting stories from Barb.

Next week, February 14th, George Mowrer and David Shaffer will speak to us about the importance of the Rotary International Foundation.  This is great information for newer members and a great reminder for those of us who have been around!  Come see and support George and David for the work they do for the foundation.

You will notice in the announcements that our program on February 21st includes a presentation by Carol Hart Metzker.  Carol is an educator and author who is passionate about the fight against human trafficking.  Carol has received several awards for her meaningful work, most notably Rotary International’s highest award, The Service Above Self Award.  You might recall that President Gerry shared with us that Ashton Kutcher spoke at the Rotary International Convention about human trafficking in an attempt to raise international awareness to this global problem.  We are honored to have Carol present to us, so please mark your calendar and invite guest on February 21st… maybe they will catch the Rotary bug!

Announcements:

  1. Upcoming Meetings:
    • February 14th: Rotary International Foundation - George Mowrer and David Shaffer
    • February 21st: Carol Hart Metzker - Human Trafficking
  2. SAVE THE DATE:  PDG Doug Cook, the District Foundation Chair, has announced that the 2nd Annual Foundation gala will be held on March 17, 2018. All proceeds of the event will go to the Annual Fund to be used for projects locally, and around the world.
  3. Our Club has received a request from PDG Doug Cook to donate a basket from Bethlehem Rotary Club to the Gala Committee’s auction. Our club has traditionally donated one or two baskets of Bethlehem-related items for the auction. Please consider donating an item for the Bethlehem Rotary Basket. Dee Dee Foran will be collecting items for the basket at our meeting.
  4. District 7430 has announced that the District will sponsor a Rotary Friendship Exchange which will take place between April 26, 2018 and May 7, 2018. There will be 6 Rotarian couples from Sweden who will be visiting us during this time. Our District 7430 will be providing an itinerary and a van for transportation during their visit, but we are looking for Rotarians who are willing to provide the couples with a place to stay during their visit. The visiting Rotarians will be paying for all of their own activities and tours while they are here. The District expects that they will plan on the Rotarians spending between one and three days at each home, depending on the eventual itinerary. This is a great way to enjoy the international nature of your Rotary experience, that is, by getting to know Rotarians from around the world right in your own home. If you would like more information, please contact Gerry or me.

Yours in Rotary service,

President-Elect Mark Reed

Check Presentation to Junior League of the LV
Bethlehem Rotary's "Tastes & Tunes" 2017 Raises $50,000 for Junior League of the Lehigh Valley
On Sunday, October 1, 2017, at the Historic Hotel Bethlehem, the Rotary Club of Bethlehem conducted its fifth annual Tastes & Tunes fund-raising event.  The designated charitable recipient for the event was the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley, an organization of  women with a current focus on educational disparity.  Volunteers from the Rotary Club and the Junior League helped create a memorable event that attracted 12 participating restaurants, 23 sponsors, more than 100 auction items and more than 200 attendees.

The happy result of this amazing effort was a $50,000 check proudly presented at the December 6, 20167 weekly meeting of the Club by Tastes & Tunes co-chairs Bob Smith and Deb Walter to Junior League president Alison Zavatone.
