Tueday, June 6, 2016

Greetings fellow Rotarians,

At our May 31st meeting, Dale Kochard reported on our 2017 Camp Neidig Barbeque which will be held at Camp Manatawny in Douglassville, PA on Monday June 19th from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. The BBQ dinner will be followed by the camp closing ceremonies. Cost is $15 per person, and the deadline to order tickets is June 8th. Tickets can be ordered on the Camp Neidig website, or by following this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/camp-neidig-2017-neidig-night-chicken-bbq-registration-32010656736[eventbrite.com

Our speaker for the meeting was one of our members, Dr. Bryon Grigsby, President of Moravian College. Bryon was introduced by Mark Reed, who is particularly qualified to make the introduction. Bryon gave us an overview of Moravian’s new Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Center which is scheduled to open in August 2017. The Center will be known as the Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz Center for Health Sciences, and will be located at what was the 24/7 Racquetball and Fitness Club.

The Center represents an $8.2 million investment in what will be a state of the art facility, with an award winning faculty, and is the vision of Dr. Grigsby, who recognized the growing demand for health science professionals in the U.S. and the Lehigh Valley. The Center will employ the use of a virtual cadaver lab, and robots which will simulate different types of patient interactions. This will allow nursing students to practice before actually confronting situations with a human being.

Statistically, 70% of Moravian graduates remain in Pennsylvania and 53% in the Lehigh Valley, which makes the Center an important benefit to all of us. At the conclusion of Bryon’s presentation, Hank Barnette pointed out that three of the biggest issues we face today are education, health care, and jobs. The Center will be helping to address all three. We are indeed fortunate to have Moravian play such a vital role in the future of our community.

Driven to serve

What do you get when a handful of young leaders put their heads together and “dream big?” Apparently, you get a 14-city, 2,400-mile road trip that provides 2,500 hours of service by more than 500 volunteers. The Connecting for Good Tour of the American West Coast was organized by San Francisco Rotary member Danielle Lallement, and inspired by brainstorming that took place at a Young Professionals Summit in 2014.
