Suggest a Speaker
Sunday, April 1, 2018

At our meeting of March 28, I reminded members about the upcoming District 7430 Conference on April 27-29th. You can sign up for the Saturday only session for $99, and receive a full reimbursement from our club. Also, our Rotary International Conference in Toronto is coming up on June 23-27th, and offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the diverse cultures and rich relationships we share with Rotarians around the world. Please consider attending.

Our speaker was Barb Miller. Barb is a retired Federal Prosecutor who is licensed with the PA Game Commission as a wildlife rescue agent. Members will remember that Barb has spoken to us in the past about “Wildlife in Your Backyard”, and has many interesting stories as well as tips about how to deal with injured and distressed animals. We learned that discarded plastic containers, left out in the open, can be a death sentence for deer and other wildlife. Barb recommends picking up and disposing of any plastic you see lying in the open on the ground. She also informed us that the greatest threat to the resurgence of the American Eagle today is the use of lead shot for hunting. Copper and brass bullets and shot cost slightly more, but avoid the tragic result of poisoning our national symbol when they feast on the remains of field-dressed game. Please advise any hunters you know to consider switching to non-lead ammunition. There is more information at: www.huntingwithnonlead.org .

CALL TO ACTION

When RI President Ian Riseley assumed office last July, he challenged all Rotary Clubs to take action against climate change by planting at least one tree in their community for each Rotary member. The April issue of The Rotarian, has several articles on the importance of trees, and of planting trees for the future. Planting trees has been a Rotary tradition since our founding by Paul Harris. I am calling for any members who are interested in participating in this project, in any way, to please contact me about participating.

Our speaker for our upcoming regular meeting on April 4th is a classification talk by Laura Kaplus. We will also be inducting our newest members. Please come to support Laura and our new members.
