At our October 4th meeting, Ron Madison announced that Ned Bolcar will be our speaker for our November 8th program. Ned was the captain of Notre Dame’s 1988 NCAA Championship Team. He played 3 seasons in the NFL, and resides in Phillipsburg.

I gave a Polio update for the year-to-date period ending on August 30th, and there were 10 confirmed new cases of polio vs. 33 at this time last year. Our contributions are winning the fight, and we have to keep working until we get to zero.

Our Speaker was Smith Holland, President and CEO of Crayola. Bob Schenkel had invited Smith to speak, and made the introduction. Smith explained how Crayola seeks to be a good citizen of our community, and defines its business purpose as helping parents and educators to raise creatively alive children, who will grow into creative and inspired adults.

The company has been making Crayola Crayons in Easton since 1903, and has extended its product lines around the world. The company continuously introduces new and innovative products designed to help children recognize and express their creative nature. Smith expressed his core belief that- since information and data have become ubiquitous in our daily lives, the work of the future will be totally reliant on the ability of individuals to think creatively, and use information to improve our human experience.

Our 50/50 drawing was the fifth week of our return to the “Queen of Hearts” style. Deb Geiger had the winning ticket, but didn’t pull the Queen of Hearts. There are 47 cards left in the deck, and next week’s pot will start at $128. Come and try your luck!

United Kingdom pledges $130 million for polio eradication
The United Kingdom pledged $130 million on Friday toward the fight to eradicate polio. The contribution will help fund immunizations of 45 million children a year through 2020. In June, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, global leaders pledged $1.2 billion of the estimated $1.5 billion required to end polio. However, Rotary's work continues. We're now working to raise $50 million a year and to ensure that global leaders make good on this summer's pledges.
