Our October 11th meeting was a club assembly. We had two students from BAVTS, Helen Brown and Luis Rodriguez pay us a visit. At BAVTS, both Helen and Luis became interested in entering the medical field, and have developed a passion for serving others under the direction of their teacher Jen Stilgenbauer. They both told us that they were inspired to service because of the BAVTS program.

I announced that two new members were approved by the Board at Wednesday’s BR Board meeting- Patrick Morgan, and Karley Sebia.

I also announced that our President-Elect, Mark Reed, will be conducting a study of our recent and successful Tastes & Tunes event on October 1st. Mark will be trying to determine the strengths and weaknesses of our T&T planning and execution. If you would like to help with this project, please contact Mark.

We will be starting Operation Warm this week. We ask members to contribute $20, and each $20 donation will pay for a winter coat for a child in need. We will contribute the money raised to the Boys & Girls Club who will take the children to shop for and select a coat to keep them warm this winter. Dee Dee Foran will be collecting money after our meetings. Please consider donating.

I received a notice from Diane Donaher that she is throwing her hat in the ring to serve as our District Governor for the year 2020-2021. Diane has been a member of Bethlehem Rotary for over 14 years, is a past president, and has served our club in numerous capacities over the years. She is also the author of our 5 Year Strategic Plan, which was adopted in 2017. All of us think Diane is an excellent choice for DG, and the meeting attendees voted unanimously to submit her name in nomination to the District Nominating Committee. Thanks, Diane for your service to Bethlehem Rotary, and your willingness to assume this formidable commitment in our behalf. We know that you will do a great job!

We formally inducted Laura Kaplus as our newest member. Laura is the Director of the Priscilla Payne Hurd Foundation, and was introduced by her sponsor, Lisa Jordan. Please welcome Laura to Bethlehem Rotary.

Amy Eskind of Nashville, TN addressed our club about a book she is writing about the 2016 election. The book will attempt to address the question of why many Americans did not vote in the last election, and how that impacts American democracy. She reminded us that only 54% of voting age Americans cast a vote in 2016, the second lowest participation in American history. She would like to know why people chose not to vote, and her website: http://www.youcallthisademocracy.com/  allows you to confidentially and anonymously tell her why you didn’t. She is traveling the country to visit Rotary clubs around the U.S. as part of her research for the book. If you did not vote in 2016, please use her website to help with her research. It is important to all of us.

50/50 drawing was the sixth week of our return to the “Queen of Hearts” style. Al Krug had the winning ticket, but didn’t pull the Queen of Hearts. There are 46 cards left in the deck, and next week’s pot will start at $143. Come and try your luck!
